A Postcard from the Hammock
|
Greetings from the garden hammock. The weather is hot, and the people are lovely.
|
August is a time to relax and release. To let loose, to be more gentle with oneself and the environment. To stay at the beach just a bit longer, to have that one dessert extra, to sleep that one hour longer. It’s the holidays, after all. We’ll face the rigidity of everyday life once we’re back home.
|
But why can’t we allow these little joys in our daily lives? What are we conscious of in our day-to-day that makes this part so challenging? Are we afraid our alarm clock will throw itself out the window if we sleep longer at home to rest? Most likely, our alarm committing suicide is not on our list of worries. But there is a real fear around not meeting expectations. Not allowing ourselves to just hang out at the beach or the park an hour longer, so as not to seem lazy. Not having that dessert to comply with societal ideals of body image. Getting up to not show up late for work.

So this month, I am marinating the question, what we can do when we leave those extrinsic biases at the door. I am serving the idea of gentleness on ice. And I hang out at the beach for just one hour longer. Because this text wouldn’t be the same if I hadn’t experienced the beauty of the sunset, but had gone home instead to tend to my emails.
